Human anatomy and physiology courses present exciting and tremendous challenges to health care students. This will likely be the most challenging area of your studies, medical students often spend a year or more learning the basics. As a Medical Assistant you do not need to study all the details in human anatomy and physiology, however it is a good idea to learn the basics and the chief functions of the major body systems.
Anatomy and Physiology provide the critical concepts that help us understand the human body. Anatomy is the study of the structure of the body (example: the heart is an anatomical body part.) Where as physiology is concerned with the function of body parts (example: how the heart pumps blood). As you study both anatomy and physiology you be learning about one of the most fascinating subjects possible, your own body. You will examine the major body systems. A body system is a group of body organs that work together to accomplish a common goal (such as the Cardiovascular system which for the most part is the heart and blood vessels, they work together to circulate blood throughout the body). The major body systems are: The integumentary (skin and nails), skeletal, muscular, digestive, cardiovascular, lymphatic, nervous, urinary, reproductive and endocrine systems.
